Byzantine Museum of Veria

The Byzantine Museum of Veria is housed in the "Mylos tou Markou" (= the Mill of Mark), a recently renovated industrial building of the early 20th century. It's located in the protected district of Kyriotissa. It includes three floors, with a total area of 720 sq.m. The museological concept is based on the idea of a museum with a regional character, which will refer to the culture of the entire Central and Western Macedonia, while complementing the byzantine collections of Thessaloniki.

Each floor of the museum hosts a separated section of the permanent exhibition. The exhibits include a small part of the rich collection of portable icons, wall paintings (frescoes) from temples and secular buildings, mosaic floors, manuscripts and antiquities, pottery and micro-arts, coins and wood carvings, burial findings, architectural decorations and marble inscriptions.

The exhibition on the first floor presents the main elements of the Byzantine culture through the example of Veria, a peripheral city of the Byzantine Empire with an important history and rich in monuments. The main axis of the organization of the exhibited material is the various cultural relations between Veria and the great centers of the Byzantine world, such as Constantinople and Thessaloniki, but also with the cities of the area of Macedonia.

The exchanges between cities are multifaceted and are exprimed in multiple domains: worship, art, economic and commercial transactions, but also in human resources which consists the main vehicle for the dissemination of dominant ideas.

Based on the information that the objects itself contains, five sections were drawn up, most of which bear the conventional title of the city to which Veria is related.

The main points of this inter-cities exchanges are Constantinople, representing the center, Thessaloniki, which reflects the capital city of the area, and Kastoria, as another example of a peripheral city.

The "common language" between all this cities is clearly visible on the monuments of Veria throughout the long history of Byzantium, but also in post-Byzantium era, especially through paintings, an art that was richly represented in the region.

Finally, emphasis is placed on the contribution of the human factor: artists whose movements contributed to the spread of the ideas, aesthetic values and ideological currents of the empire.
